KIRSCH KALKAN...A small peaceful Mediterranean resort and fishing town on the beautiful Turquoise Coast of Turkey, Kalkan has not been touched by mass tourism. More sophisticated than the usual resort town, Kalkan appeals to travellers looking for more than a "sun and sea" holiday. According to the Sunday Times, Kalkan attracts the kind of visitor who would also enjoy Tuscany or the Dordogne. The Guardian likens the town to "the Italian Riviera minus the poseurs." Kalkan curls snuggly around a historic harbour sheltered at the foot of the towering Taurus Mountains. The town overlooks a beautiful bay in which islands seem to magically float upon the shimmering sea. Narrow streets twist down to the harbour, lined with old white washed villas with shuttered windows situated alongside small local specialty shops and restaurants in historic buildings. Overhead hang original carved Ottoman Greek timber balconies garlanded with thick masses of brilliantly coloured bougain villea cascading to the streets below. It is a very special place with a unique atmosphere. As a village, Kalkan is somewhat more sophisticated than the average resort, this is because the restaurants, hotels and bars are owned by Istanbul Turks, as well as locals, which provides for a more eclectic variety of menu and atmosphere than is normally found in Mediterranean resorts. The many bars symbolise Kalkan`s atmosphere, some play Jazz, others Classical or contemporary music, however most share one thing in common which is the wonderful views. Restaurants in the village are plentiful and cuisine choice abundant from traditional Turkish to more european menus. Kalkan itself is set in an area of Turkey steeped in history, right in the heart of the old Lycian region. There is a plethora of ancient sites in the immediate vicinity including Xanthos, Letoon, Pinara, Tlos and Patara. Slightly further afield are the marvelous sights at Kekova, Demre, Myra, Phaselis, Olympos, Aspendos and even Ephesus is within reach. Also a simple trip up to the mountains behind Kalkan will surely take your breath away. KALKAN BEACHES- Kalkan has several beautiful beaches.  A very pleasant pebbly public beach with crystal clear water is located to the East of Kalkan harbour. Otherwise, hop onto a dolmus and head for one of the two beaches near Kalkan. KAPUTAS BEACH - Is a lovely fine sandy swimming cove nestled at the foot of a striking mountain gorge, about 10 mins from Kalkan.  The water is always a  brilliant colour of turquoise.  Umbrellas can be hired here and a few enterprising locals sells snacks and drinks.

PATARA BEACH - Is a beautiful 18km stretch of sand backed by dunes and without a single building on it. However, at the end near the dolmus drop off are a few basic restaurants to supply you with food, drinks, umbrellas and sun beds.  Some very nice Lycian ruins can be visited neraby aswell as Patara which was once a large port city of ancient Lycia.  Patara beach is closed off after sunset as it is one of the few places in the World where the endangered Loggerhead turtles come to lay their eggs.  There is also horse riding at Patara. Patara Beach was voted the best beach in the world by The Times. The main beach that visitors see however is Belcekiz. KAS - Another Greek populated town that was known as Andifli until 1923. Its new name Kas means ‘eyebrow’ or ‘something carved’. Although a pretty town with a fishing boats and yachts in the harbour it is now quite touristic but there are no beaches in Kas itself. However it makes a good base to visit the nearby sites and coastal bays. The ruins of ancient Antiphellos are scattered all around Kas.
