GORGEOUS GUMUSLUK...(pronounced Goo-moosh-look) - If you walk for 10 mins to the bay north east of Gumusluk you will see a buried wall jutting from a hillside into the sea. While the area`s archaeological status forbids diving with tanks, snorklers will find more walls under water here, as well as an ancient breakwater in the harbour. Those visiting by boat will want to stay close to the island on the eastern side of the entrance to avoid hitting underwater structures.  The island, known as Rabbit Island by the locals, separates the 2 sheltered bays of Gumusluk. If you sit in a shore side restaurant and watch for a while you will see rabbits on the island. A villager who sells them in markets elsewhere raises them there. It is possible to wade to the island through no more than knee deep water and see some remains as you do so, and then sunbathe and dive from the many rock formations.  Several of the romantic restaurants have terraced roofs, perfect for enjoying the tranquil scene or for watching the sunset. The restaurants supply food of surprisingly good quality in an unchanged and tranquil environment and the ones by the harbour are typified by their rushwoven umbrellas and pretty flowered table settings.  On the route back to Bodrum it is possible to see one of the few remaining working windmills in the area, facing north west to catch the prevailing summer winds to drive the blades, it grinds locally grown wheat by the traditional method.  Building regulations mean the sea front has kept its original appearance and photogenic charm.  No cars are allowed in the central area, which is only a short walk from the car park.  Country walks around Gumusluk are invigorating and rewarding, especially in spring and early summer when displays of wild flowers cast their rural spell and mingle their fragrance with the smell of the sea.   It`s other attribute are  the serenity of its nights and still being an unchanged fishing village. The origin of the word ‘Gümüslük’ is unclear. Gümüslük means a form of "silver".  Piri Reis explains how this village got its name in his writings in 1521.  He explains that during the reign of Sultan Mehmed II flourishing silver mines existed near the town and the city was named after them.  However, the locals argue that Gümüslük gets its name due to the silvery light emitted by the sea`s phosphorescence at night.
